A KPI tile, or card, shows one number on its own: total revenue, number of orders, average days late. It sits at the top of a dashboard because it is read first, before anybody looks at a chart, and it answers the question the dashboard exists for.
A good tile states one aggregation of one column and responds to the filters like every other chart, so selecting a region shows that region's total.

Generated HTML dashboards open with a row of tiles: a sum, a count of rows or an average, labelled with what was aggregated. The tiles follow the filter bar and every click in a chart. The logistics example has four: shipments, late deliveries, average days late and freight cost. The HTML runtime computes no derived metrics, so a tile such as a share of late deliveries needs a column that holds it; that example carries a 0-or-1 late column so late deliveries can be summed.
