A Power BI project is a folder with a .pbip file at its top. Unlike a .pbix, which keeps the model in a binary part, a project stores the semantic model and the report as text files that Power BI Desktop reads and writes. It opens in Desktop like any report, and from there it can be saved as a .pbix. A .pbit is the related template format: the same definitions without data, which asks for its parameters when opened.
Text files can be generated, compared and kept in version control, which is what makes the format suitable for a report that is built outside Power BI.
Where it appears in DASH:Gen
A Power BI run always produces a project or a template, never a .pbix: a generated .pbix would be a file Desktop refuses to open. You unzip the download, open the .pbip in Power BI Desktop and press Save. The steps are in the Excel to Power BI guide.
