DASH:Gen

Guide

Share a dashboard with somebody who has no Power BI licence

A dashboard that needs a licence to open is a dashboard half the recipients never see. One HTML file needs a browser and nothing else.

Sharing a report inside Power BI normally means that the person reading it is in your organisation and licensed to. For a customer, an auditor, a board member on a phone, or a colleague in another company, that is often the end of it. DASH:Gen can build the same dashboard as a single .html file instead.

What the recipient gets

One file with the charts, the KPI tiles, a filter bar and a searchable table. Clicking a bar filters every other chart. Everything is computed in the browser from the rows embedded in the file, and the file loads nothing from anywhere: its own content policy forbids it. It opens in aeroplane mode and behind a firewall that allows nothing. See the live example for what that looks like.

Two ways to hand it over

The honest limits

Step by step

  1. Open dashgen.de and drop in the same file the Power BI report was built from.
  2. Describe what the dashboard should show and press Generate HTML.
  3. Download it, or press Share for a link.

The HTML dashboard page lists what the file contains.

Questions

Does the recipient of a DASH:Gen dashboard need a licence or an account?

No. The file opens by double-clicking it, in any current browser, without a network connection.

Can I share a DASH:Gen dashboard by link instead of a file?

Yes. A finished HTML dashboard can be shared by link from the window. The link works as long as the dashboard's file is kept, and you can stop it at any time.

Does a DASH:Gen HTML dashboard update when the data changes?

No. The rows are inside the file as they were when it was built. For new data, build a new version from a newer file.

Try it without an account

Three HTML dashboards, one Power BI report and one Apache Superset bundle a day need no sign-up and no card. No file to hand? Pick Sales under the drop zone.
